Which case are you?

  • Passport not visa-exempt, or you want up to 90 days: apply online before you travel, from outside Vietnam. It costs US$25 single entry or US$50 multiple entry. Processing is no more than 3 working days.
  • Already in Vietnam: you cannot apply until you have left. For a longer stay, see how to extend your stay in Nha Trang.
  • Passport on an exemption list: you may not need a visa, and two programmes give 45 days.
  • Want to stay past the e-visa maximum: the portal describes no extension of the e-visa itself. A new visa may be possible if someone in Vietnam invites or guarantees you.
  • Arriving by sea or air near Nha Trang: use Nha Trang Port or Cam Ranh Airport, both on the portal’s lists.

Who can get an e-visa

Resolution 127/NQ-CP (2023) grants e-visas to citizens of all countries and territories.

You must be a foreigner currently abroad who wants to enter Viet Nam. Someone already in Vietnam can request an e-visa only after leaving the country.

The portal’s guidance for people already in Viet Nam is to apply for a new visa if an authority, organisation or individual in Viet Nam invites or guarantees them. See how to extend your stay in Nha Trang for that route.

Foreigners in the categories of clauses 1 to 4 of Article 8 of the Immigration Law cannot apply on the portal. They apply through an inviting or guaranteeing agency to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. An e-visa is granted to foreigners holding a passport who do not fall under those clauses.

  1. Check that you are abroad and wish to enter Viet Nam.
  2. Go to evisa.gov.vn or thithucdientu.gov.vn, the two addresses on the portal’s own FAQ. The FAQ warns that unofficial pages may result in unauthorized fees.
  3. Declare all true information fully, accurately and honestly, in English. The application is denied if the immigration authority finds dishonest information.
  4. Pay through the portal’s e-payment gateway. The fee is non-refundable if the visa is not granted.
  5. Wait up to 3 working days from the date the authority receives complete information and the visa fee, for an online filing.
  6. Enter through a border gate on the Government’s list.

You may apply up to 1 year before your planned entry.

Photo and passport scan

Have two images ready before you open the form:

  • Portrait photo: recent, 4x6 cm, JPG or JPEG, under 2MB, front-facing, no hat, no glasses, formal attire, white background.
  • Biometric passport page: the system reads it and fills in your passport data, and you check and correct each field.

If the passport image is invalid, the system will not let you submit. Fix the image rather than retyping the data by hand.

Check your application status

Use the portal’s Check application status page. It asks for your e-Visa application number, your email, your date of birth (full, or year only) and a security code. The portal’s own instruction page lists the same inputs as profile ID, date of birth and email.

Validity and passport rule

By law an e-visa cannot exceed 90 days. Its validity must be at least 30 days shorter than the passport’s validity.

Circular 28/2026/TT-BTC set the fee schedule. It took effect on 1 April 2026 and replaced Circular 25/2021/TT-BTC.

The Ministry’s own e-visa procedure page still lists superseded fee circulars as its legal basis, not Circular 28/2026/TT-BTC. Pay only on the official portal.

E-visa or visa exemption

Visa exemption is a separate route that depends on your nationality. Citizens of 12 named countries, including the UK, Germany, France, Japan and South Korea, get 45 days from entry for any purpose. That runs from 15 March 2025 to 14 March 2028.

A separate list of 12 European countries gets 45 days for tourism only. It runs from 15 August 2025 to 14 August 2028.

If your passport is not covered, or you need up to 90 days or multiple entries, the e-visa is open to every country and territory.

Entry gates near Nha Trang

An e-visa can only be used to enter and exit through border gates on the list approved by the Government. The 2023 resolution names both Nha Trang gates.

The portal’s current list also includes the Cam Ranh Airport Border Gate as item 2 of the air gates. It lists the Nha Trang Port Border Gate, Khanh Hoa Province, as item 9 of the sea gates.

The portal’s sea-gate list also names Ca Na Port and Ninh Chu Port, both in Khanh Hoa province. Across the country, the portal’s list names 15 designated international air gates, 27 land gates and 39 sea gates.

Resolution 389/NQ-CP (2025) added further gates to the 2023 list. It took effect on its signing date, 2 December 2025.

Arriving at Cam Ranh

Cam Ranh International Airport is the air gate for Nha Trang. Show your e-visa to immigration officers at the gate. For what happens after landing, see Cam Ranh Airport immigration on arrival.

Gates added after 2023

Resolution 127/NQ-CP took effect on 15 August 2023. Resolution 389/NQ-CP later added Long Thanh International Airport to the gate list, applicable once the airport is in operation. It added Gia Binh International Airport on the same terms.

Use the portal’s current list when you choose a gate. The list changes, so check it before you book.

The Ministry’s procedure page lists the superseded fee circular 25/2021/TT-BTC as a legal basis. The current fee schedule is Circular 28/2026/TT-BTC, in force since 1 April 2026. The fee itself is on the portal. Do not pay any amount to an unofficial site.

Who cannot use the portal

NG1 visas go to members of delegations invited by the top state and Party leaders. NG3 visas go to members of diplomatic missions, consular offices and international-organisation offices. Both groups apply through an inviting agency to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

If you need more time in Vietnam

The portal says an e-visa holder in Viet Nam may be considered for a new visa if invited or guaranteed by an authority, organisation or individual there. A stay extension needs a sponsor to file the request. It takes no more than 5 working days from a complete dossier, and the fee is US$10.

Why an e-visa plan fails

The portal names one denial ground: dishonest information in the application. Other plans fail for reasons the same sources make clear.

  • The applicant is already in Vietnam. The visa is issued to foreigners currently abroad.
  • The applicant belongs to the clause 1 to 4 categories of Article 8. Those foreigners apply through an inviting agency.
  • The traveller arrives at a gate that is not on the list.
  • The passport expires too soon, because the e-visa must end at least 30 days before it.
  • The visa is refused after payment. The fee is non-refundable.

If you want to work on an e-visa

An e-visa covers the same inbound business purpose as a DN1 or DN2 visa, without a Vietnamese sponsor. Working is a separate matter. A visa purpose can be converted only in listed cases, and one is an e-visa entrant who holds a work permit or a confirmation of work-permit exemption. A converted visa is re-issued with the symbol and validity of the new purpose.

A foreign worker with no work permit or exemption certificate, or with an expired one, is fined VND 15-25 million. A foreigner must carry out activities in Vietnam that match the purpose of entry.
