Nha Trang has one city beach and three very different beaches within a day trip, so the right pick depends on whether you want a quick swim, calm water or a quiet shore. Use the city beach for an easy dip, Bai Dai for shallow water, and Doc Let when you want to leave the crowds behind.

Quick picks

  • Quick swim from your hotel: the city beach, with lifeguards from 5 am to 5 pm.
  • Calm, shallow water: Bai Dai, with gentle waves.
  • A quiet day with a sunrise fish market: Doc Let, 49 km north.
  • Rocks and views, not swimming: Hon Chong.

City beach: swim near your hotel, inside the flags

The city beach is the easy choice because you walk out of the hotel and into the sea. Pick it for a short swim rather than a long beach day, and keep to the buoyed area, because swimming outside it or in zones with no-swimming signs is banned.

Parasols on the sand and towers along the seafront.

Danger signs and no-swimming flags were planted along the 5 km from Tran Phu Street to the Thanh Nien football field, yet many visitors ignored them. Lifeguards must be on duty from 5 am to 5 pm, and only 25 of them, in two shifts, watch the whole central route. Swim in that window, close to a lifeguard post.

Avoid the stretch opposite 80 Tran Phu, where a barge more than 30 m long ran aground at the end of 2019. Iron parts of the bow still lie under the sand there and can emerge when the tide changes or the waves are strong.

Good for: a short swim, an early dip before breakfast, and anyone who wants no transport. Skip if: you want a long, calm swim, because only 25 lifeguards cover the whole central route. For more detail, read swimming safety at Nha Trang beach.

Hon Chong: rocks first, a sheltered beach next door

Hon Chong is famous for its boulders, and swimming at the promontory itself is not recommended, because the rocks extend into the water and the shoreline is rough. The beach starts just north of it and runs along Pham Van Dong Street.

That northern beach is shallow and sheltered, with minimal waves. Sun loungers with umbrella and towel rent for VND 50,000, and motorbike parking costs VND 5,000. As of 21/02/2025, the promontory is about 4 km from the centre; a Grab or taxi takes 10-15 minutes and costs around VND 50,000-70,000 one way.

Go in late afternoon for the light and cooler air, because tour buses arrive from around 9:30 am and the site is crowded by midday.

Good for: a short ride, sunset and photos. Skip if: you want a proper swimming day; Bai Dai is better for that. Details on the rocks are in the Hon Chong guide.

Bai Dai: shallow water for a beach week

Bai Dai is the pick when the beach is the trip: a 10 km shoreline of fine white sand with a gently sloping beach. The water is very shallow and clear, with gentle waves and no deep pits or dangerous strong currents.

It sits about 25 km from Nha Trang ward, so it works best as a base or a long day out. The route 18 bus costs VND 50,000 per trip and takes 50 to 60 minutes, but it runs between the city and the airport, not to the beach itself; the airport transfer guide compares the options.

Water sports can be bought on the beach with no prior registration. As of 11/07/2025, jet ski hire tops out around VND 800,000 for 30 minutes, and riders must wear a life jacket. Seafood places along the shore are known for being inexpensive.

Good for: families, long swims and resort stays. Skip if: you want bars and street food on foot, since the city is a long ride away. More in the Bai Dai guide and the where to stay guide.

Doc Let: a quiet shore and a sunrise fish market

Doc Let lies in Ninh Hai ward, Ninh Hoa town, 49 km north of central Nha Trang. The sea is clear, with tall sand dunes and rows of casuarina trees behind it, and the beach is known for fine white sand and shady coconut palms.

The sea is gentle all year, so you can swim without worrying about sudden fierce waves. Still look at the water on the day. Great beach weather does not always mean it is safe to swim, because rip currents often form on calm, sunny days.

The fish market is the reason to come early. It lasts only a few hours at sunrise, with dozens of boats coming ashore from 5 AM, and it thins out after 7 AM. It has no stalls or signs and is held on the sand. Most seafood has no posted price, so ask and bargain first.

A bus runs from Quyet Thang bus stop between 5:00 and 19:05, as of 11/08/2025. For the full trip, read the Doc Let guide.

Good for: a quiet day, sunrise and seafood. Skip if: you need lifeguards and a long list of services on the sand.

When to go

Bai Dai’s dry season runs from January to August, the best time to visit. September to December is the rainy season, with heavy rain, big waves and high tides that can affect plans. Nha Trang station averages 16.1 mm of rain in February against 312.3 mm in October and 381.6 mm in November, and 4.3 rainy days in February against 17.6 in October and 18.0 in November.

When a storm is coming, do not swim. On 6/11/2025 the Nha Trang Bay Management Board urgently asked residents and tourists not to swim or play at sea during a storm. It also told businesses to suspend deckchair and parasol rental along the Tran Phu and Pham Van Dong beaches. The storm and flood guide covers the warnings.

Swim safely

Swim in planned public areas that have professional lifeguards and jellyfish warning signs, as the Khanh Hoa digital tourism platform advises. In July 2026 Portuguese man-of-wars appeared in several areas of Nha Trang Bay, and authorities urged beachgoers to avoid affected waters.

Rip currents do not pull you under; they pull you away from shore. If one takes you, swim parallel to the shoreline to escape it. In an emergency, call 112 for search and rescue. Khanh Hoa also runs a 24-hour hotline for tourists, *2258 from a mobile. See the emergency numbers guide for the rest.
