Lost Passport Nha Trang: Police, Embassy, Immigration

Your first three stops are the local police office closest to where the passport was lost or stolen, your embassy for an emergency travel document, and immigration for an exit or replacement visa. Immigration only accepts a Vietnamese police report. The police emergency number is 113.

Work in this order: Vietnamese police report, then your embassy, then immigration, because Vietnamese immigration authorities will only accept a Vietnamese police report to process an exit or replacement visa. Block your cards and SIM while you wait; the steps are further down.

Your three stops, in order

  1. Go to the local police office closest to where the passport was lost or stolen and apply for the report there, because you cannot apply in a different location.
  2. If you hold a UK or Australian passport, ask your embassy for an emergency travel document or emergency passport.
  3. Take the police report to immigration: Vietnamese authorities will not permit you to depart Vietnam until your exit visa is issued.

Stop 1: the police report

Take a translator with you when you report to the local police, because the emergency numbers are operated in Vietnamese only. Leave with the report itself, since you should always get a police report.

The Australian Embassy and Consulate-General cannot assist with obtaining a police report, and they recommend asking your hotel, travel agent or group, or other local contacts. In Nha Trang that means your hotel front desk is the first person to ask.

Khanh Hoa Provincial Police Headquarters is at 80 Tran Phu Street, Nha Trang. Which office takes a foreigner’s loss report is not confirmed, so ask before you travel across town.

Stop 2: your embassy

The emergency document depends on your nationality, so open your own embassy’s page. For a UK passport, an emergency travel document lets you travel from abroad when you cannot use your passport, and it is usually valid for one single or return journey. The application is online and costs £125, with no refund.

If your wallet went with the passport, a relative or friend can pay for you. Your old UK passport will usually be cancelled automatically once you have paid, so do not pay until you are sure it is gone.

For an Australian emergency passport, bring two identical passport-sized photos and as many identity documents with your signature and photo as possible.

Stop 3: immigration

Vietnamese authorities will not permit you to depart until the exit visa is issued, and they only accept a Vietnamese police report for it, not a statutory declaration witnessed by an Australian consular official. That is why the police report comes first.

Once you hold a new passport and live here on a visa or residence card, you can move the still-valid visa, temporary residence card or temporary stay period over to it for USD 5. Foreigners lawfully residing in Vietnam file in person during office hours on working days at the immigration management office of the provincial police. Bring the new passport as one original, and expect processing of no more than 5 working days from a complete dossier.

Block your cards and SIM today

Lock a lost or stolen card yourself straight away. For a Vietcombank card, call 1900545413, press 1, then 1, then 1, and follow the instructions. You can also send the SMS “VCB KT TOANBO” to 6167 to lock all your VCB cards.

For the SIM, the process depends on the operator:

  • Vietnamobile: call 0922 789 789 from any phone, including another network, and ask for an urgent lock in both directions, outgoing and incoming. Have the passport or visa number you registered the SIM with ready.
  • Viettel eSIM: call the hotline, 198 or 18008098, and go to the nearest store to redo the SIM.

How other carriers handle a lost SIM, and what ID they accept without a passport, is not confirmed.

What you risk if you do not report it

Under a decree in force from 15 December 2025, not notifying the competent authority, as the law requires, of the loss of a passport or an entry, exit or residence document carries a fine of VND 500,000 to 2,000,000. Giving false information when reporting the loss is also one of the acts listed in that article.

A foreigner who travels within Vietnam without carrying a passport faces a warning or a fine of VND 300,000 to 500,000. So keep the police report with you until the new passport arrives.
